The Necessity of Water Softening Systems in the Home

Homeowners or occupants should be alert to the scum build up on their shower doors or dishwasher. This is a strong indication of hard water being supplied and used in the home. Some consumers are particularly sensitive to hard water; those with sensitive skins; pregnant women or young infants should avoid consuming hard water.

Hence, it becomes necessary in alleviating this hard water supply problem. One simple way is to install a water softening system in the home to treat the hard water supplied through the mains. It could be the area that has hard water and the local authorities are unable to treat the hard water thoroughly to become soft before transporting to the homes.

Issues with hard water

Some pertinent issues with hard water bring consumers to consider its immediate treatment before coming out of their tap. Hard water has too many metals and minerals such as calcium and magnesium which come through the groundwater as a result of soil and rock dissolution.

The hardness of water is usually computed by grains per gallon or milligrams for every liter. Industry standards allow 1 GPG or less for soft water whereas hard water is usually computed at 7GPG to 10.5 GPG.

The dissolved magnesium and calcium precipitate in the hard water supply tend to accumulate inside the delivery pipes and water heaters or dishwasher; even industrial machinery and pipes are not spared from its effect over the long run. The built up of scale slows down the flow of water supply to the home causing a slower water flow as well as lower heat conduction. Pipes can be clogged up over time.

Hard water can also reduce the soap and shampoo lathering capabilities; the metal contents in hard water tend to react with the soap to form a scum-like substance that is sticky and not effective in cleaning.

Softening process

Any home or premise supplied with hard water should have a water softening system installed. The technology used here is based on convention where the hard water calcium and magnesium ions switch with the sodium ions from the soft water. Hence, the hard water would be softened. It is acceptable to add a minimal amount of sodium into the home drinking water to make it soft.


Water softening systems work on the ion replacement procedure where a tank full of resin or zeolite would react with sodium ions to switch places with the hard water’s magnesium and calcium ions.
